Boxnote 148 February 14, 2017, Gustare/Kalotaszeg Kostoloi Hrana naturala, locala de la satele din zona Huedinului

16776021_10154379070273549_1609552643_oYes, the first boxnote of 2017!!! Yipee. Douglas was very certain no one would be selling outside at market, but the market despite minus temperatures was full of women mainly, wearing two scarves; big coats with layers and layers underneath. We were all smiles together and chats about warm Scotland vs. freezingly cold Kalotaszeg; and how attractive my mother is!! Yes, my mum has even become a bit of an HPM star!

Immediately too, we learned something new about local agriculture. Sofia of the dainty knitted slippers (almost an oxymoron which I think is what makes them so special! see photo) born in dsc_0442Dealul Negru, told me mainly rye is grown there as a cereal crop and with no chemicals … more investigation needed!! I have an amazing recipe for a rye bread, and I’m desperate to try it out with Torok Erzsi (Damos) flour.

I also chatted wih the Morlaca butter woman today, Viorica, about the amazing headdress in Morlaca which I saw in photos by Dennis Galloway from about 1930. It has a special name (which I promptly forgot, sorry) and the most beautiful thing of all, there is still someone in the village making them!

Our taste buds were also tickled when we tasted Viorica Cline’s buffalo milk after six weeks without. Thanks to the good sense of local farmers, many goodies had been stored over winter in cellars, so we were able to buy a fair bit of root veggies for us all. And we thought for the millionth time, how lucky we are to have such hard working local people who cultivate as naturally as possible these goodies for us to enjoy; and how every market with locals REALLY needs to be supported and celebrated in the way that HPM is by all of us. I don’t understand why EVERYONE doesn’t shop at markets.

Newsflash – Szilveszter in Damos has run out of homoktovis szurp/sirop de catina but has salcam/akacfa honey; – I think it is 25lei/400g (a bit more expensive than Nelu’s); immuno bomb; (Damos/Kispetri) nuts in honey – make a lovely lunchtime healthy snack – PRICE.
